Increased inforcement is the key component of the Safety Corridors. The location of a Safety Corridor is based on fatal and serious injury crashes. The goal of New Mexico’s Safety Corridors is to reduce crashes and fatalities on selected segments of roadway by 20%, which, for New Mexico, would mean saving twenty (20) to forty (40) lives per year. New Mexico currently has 12 Safety Corridors. There are two per NMDOT district (see map below for locations). The identified corridors will remain as Safety Corridors for three years or until the Transportation Programs Division Director determines, based on crash/fatality data, designation as a Safety Corridor is no longer necessary. At that time, another section of roadway in the same district will be designated as a Safety Corridor. Safety Corridors are authorized by New Mexico Statute Section 66-7-301, Subsection A (allows DOT to designate safety corridors), and Section 66-8-116, subsection D (doubles fine for speeding in the corridor).
