Santa Fe – Preliminary statistics released today by the New Mexico Department of Transportation reveal that efforts from the summer-long traffic safety campaign netted 1,765 DWI arrests.
Unofficial numbers compiled by the NMDOT indicate that there were a total of 86 traffic fatalities, including alcohol-involved, in New Mexico in June, July and August this year, compared to 111 traffic fatalities for those same months last year, a 22 percent reduction.
The “100 Days and Nights of Summer,” campaign began June 1 and ended on September 8, 2009, during which time law enforcement agencies throughout the state conducted 239 sobriety checkpoints and 759 saturation patrols. Although not all arrest and citation information has been tabulated, officers made the following preliminary count of arrests and citations during the 2009 100 Days and Nights of Summer campaign:
- Issued 36,327 speeding citations
- Issued 8,600 seat belt violation citations
- Issued 1,822 children restraint citations
- Arrested 2,649 people for driving with a suspended or revoked license
- Issued 8,336 citations for driving without insurance
- Apprehended 267 fugitives
- Made 796 felony arrests
- Recovered 12 stolen vehicles
- Made 94 drug arrests
